Second Highest Month in Airport History
May 2004 was a record-setting travel month at Mid-Continent Airport, with passenger travel figures placing it as the highest May of all time. In numbers released today, 140,399 total passengers (10% more travelers than May 2003) flew Mid-Continent Airport. The previous top May in Mid-Continent’s history was in 1987 when 133,085 passengers traveled that month. The current record month for passenger count was July 1992 which had 143,709 total passengers. City officials attribute much of this growth to the Fair Fares effort, which continues to save travelers millions of dollars.
"The Fair Fares effort brought competitive airfares and expanded service to Kansas through Mid-Continent Airport. Fair Fare$ helped make air service and low fares into catalysts for economic development and tourism development," said Bailis Bell, Director of Airports. "We have more work yet to do, but it is appropriate to enjoy the moment as we reach milestones like these along the way," he said.
For year to date numbers, there were 593,339 total passengers. This is an increase of 10% over last year’s numbers taken at the same time. For full details of activity reports and the history from year to year, go to www.flywichita.com and click on "Statistics."
About Fair Fares: Fair Fares is a public/private partnership that began in December 2001 with the intent to bring low-cost carriers to Mid-Continent Airport, Kansas’ largest commercial airfield. Currently, the initiative has turned its focus toward stabilizing and expanding the low-cost advantage at Mid-Continent and extending Fair Fares service.
