Place identification tags in and on all of your baggage. Don't forget to tag your laptop computer.
Arriving at the Airport It is recommended that you arrive at the airport 90 minutes to 2 hours prior to your departure, especially if your flight is between 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. and between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Early morning flights and mid-afternoon flights are the busiest times of the day. Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and Friday are the heaviest travel days.
Taking Film through Screening
The equipment used to screen checked baggage will damage undeveloped film. Pack your undeveloped film in your carry-on bag. High-speed and specialty film should be hand-inspected at the security checkpoint. To facilitate hand-inspection, remove your undeveloped film from the canister and pack in a clear plastic bag.
You may carry one (1) bag of photographic equipment in addition to one (1) carry-on and one (1) personal item through the screening checkpoint. The additional bag must conform to your air carrier's carry-on restrictions for size and weight. Please confirm your air carrier's restrictions prior to arriving at the airport.
Medications/Medical Conditions If you have a medical condition or disability, prepare in advance by visiting Traveling with Disabilities and/or Medical Conditions. Please allow a little extra time to proceed through the screening process. If you need a wheelchair, please reserve one at the time of making your airline reservation. All medications in any form or type (for instance, pills, injectables or homeopathic) and associated supplies (syringes, Sharps disposal container, pre-loaded syringes, jet injectors, pens, infusers, etc.) are allowed through the security checkpoint once they have been screened. Medications should be labeled so they are identifiable.
Children Flying Alone A new booklet from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) provides advice to the parents of children who must travel alone by air. When Kids Fly Alone notes that while there are no DOT regulations governing unaccompanied minors on airlines, the carriers have various rules on the ages of children they will allow to travel alone and special procedures they use to safeguard children who are traveling without an adult.
Information and Assistance The Courtesy Crew is on-hand to help with information and directions. Look for the bright red jackets. The Information Desk is staffed from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. Volunteers from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program provides information and paging services.
Travel during inclement weather Pack your patience. If a major storm rolls through, remember it's not the airline's fault if your flight is cancelled. The airlines work hard to get you to your final destination.
There will be a lot of people in the same boat as you, so be flexible. There will be limited seats available.
If you have a laptop, it's a good idea to bring it with you. If necessary, you can try to find another flight rather than waiting in a long line for an agent.
If a big storm is coming, airlines will most all the time let you change your flight for free. If you can leave early, do it.
Sign up for flight alerts from your airline.
Have a flight schedule handy. Most airlines puts out an electronic version of its schedule on their websites.
Book a hotel if it looks like you'll need one. Hotels fill up quicly in bad weather.
Bring snacks. They will come in handy if you have to spend a long time on the plane.
